TCS to Set Up ₹1 Lakh Crore Data Centre in Visakhapatnam

From Our Correspondent

Amaravati: Visakhapatnam, already at the heart of Andhra Pradesh’s digital transformation, is set to welcome another technology giant. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has expressed interest in establishing a ₹1 lakh crore, 1,000-megawatt data centre in the city, marking one of the single largest private sector technology investments in India’s history.

According to senior government officials, TCS plans to make the investment in phases and is expected to officially announce the project next month, coinciding with the inauguration of its new TCS Development Centre in Visakhapatnam.

TCS Chairman N. Chandrasekaran recently met Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu at the Secretariat in Amaravati to discuss the proposal, which aligns with the state’s push to turn Visakhapatnam into India’s next-generation AI and digital hub.

Visakhapatnam: The Emerging Data Capital

With global tech majors like Google, Meta, Cognizant, Accenture, and Sify Technologies already committing investments, Visakhapatnam is on track to become a global data infrastructure hub.

In the next two years alone, global corporations are projected to invest over ₹2.6 lakh crore in data centre projects in and around the city. Experts say these facilities will not only create direct employment but also generate 10 times more indirect jobs through the ancillary ecosystem — startups, AI companies, animation, gaming, and high-speed computing firms.

AI City in the Making

Industry experts predict that the availability of large-scale data centres will transform Visakhapatnam into India’s first true AI-powered city.

“Once these high-speed data networks go live, sectors such as artificial intelligence, animation, gaming, VFX, and cloud computing will flourish,” an official said. “It will attract leading global players seeking high-compute infrastructure within India.”

The Andhra Pradesh government is already promoting the city as a ‘Smart AI City’, leveraging its 1,000-km coastline, port connectivity, and strategic position as the gateway to East Asia.

Global Players Already on Board

  • Google (Raiden Infotech India Pvt Ltd) – ₹87,520 crore investment for a 1,000 MW data centre, already approved by the state cabinet.

  • Google (Parent Company) – Separate ₹56,000 crore data hub to be announced in November.

  • Sify Technologies – ₹16,000 crore investment for a hyperscale data centre project.

  • Meta (Facebook) – Planning a submarine cable landing station at Visakhapatnam, connecting its Asian network infrastructure.

Together, these projects are set to make Visakhapatnam a “Data Gateway to the World”, supporting advanced technologies like AI, quantum computing, and blockchain.

When the TCS data centre joins the growing cluster led by Google and Sify, experts say Visakhapatnam will rival Singapore and Dubai as a global cloud and AI hub — redefining Andhra Pradesh’s economic map for decades to come.
