Lokesh Invites Melbourne Varsity to Partner with AP in AI, Cybersecurity & Quantum Research

Melbourne (Australia): Andhra Pradesh Minister for Education, IT and Electronics Nara Lokesh visited the University of Melbourne and held discussions with senior university leadership on potential collaboration in artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, Internet of Things (IoT), and quantum technology research.

Lokesh met Vice-Chancellor Professor Emma Johnston, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Global, Culture and Engagement) Professor Michael Wesley, Dean of Arts Professor Jennifer Balint, Dean of Education Professor Marek Tesar, Dean of Engineering and IT Professor Ampalavanapillai (Thas) Nirmalathas, and Dean of Science Professor Moira O’Brien, who extended a warm welcome to the minister.

During the interaction, Lokesh emphasized Andhra Pradesh’s vision to build a future-ready economy powered by innovation, digital skilling, and advanced research. He invited the University of Melbourne to work with the AP government in talent development and applied research in emerging technologies like AI, quantum computing, and cybersecurity.

He proposed academic partnerships focusing on faculty exchange, student training programs, and joint research projects, and suggested that the university assist in developing teacher training modules and STEM-based educational reforms in Andhra Pradesh.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Emma Johnston shared that the University of Melbourne, established in 1853, is Australia’s top-ranked institution and currently 13th globally in the QS World University Rankings 2025, with over 55,000 students. She said the university is globally recognized for its excellence in research, teaching, and social impact, with a strong focus on innovation, sustainability, and global collaboration.

Professor Johnston expressed keen interest in exploring partnerships with Andhra Pradesh in education, technology, and research exchange, underscoring the university’s commitment to international engagement and cross-sector innovation.

Lokesh concluded by inviting the university’s leadership to collaborate with the Andhra Pradesh government to accelerate the state’s progress toward its development and innovation goals.
