Hyderabad: Acclaimed filmmaker S. S. Rajamouli has received one of international cinema’s rare honours, with a permanent plaque bearing his name unveiled on the Mur des Cinéastes (Wall of Filmmakers) at the Institut Lumière in Lyon, France.

With this recognition, Rajamouli joins an illustrious group of globally celebrated filmmakers whose names are commemorated on the wall, including Martin Scorsese, Clint Eastwood, Quentin Tarantino and Francis Ford Coppola.

The plaque was unveiled by Thierry Frémaux, Director of the Institut Lumière and the Cannes Film Festival, during a special ceremony attended by cinema enthusiasts and guests. Frémaux introduced Rajamouli before unveiling the plaque, acknowledging his contribution to world cinema.

The honour came as part of a special retrospective featuring screenings of Rajamouli’s blockbuster films Eega and RRR, both of which were screened to packed audiences in Lyon, underscoring the filmmaker’s growing international appeal.

The event assumed added significance as it was held in Lyon, regarded as the birthplace of cinema. The Institut Lumière stands on the historic site associated with the Lumière brothers, pioneers of motion pictures, making the recognition one of the most prestigious tributes in the global film industry.

Rajamouli, whose films have redefined the scale and global reach of Indian cinema, has earned widespread international acclaim following the phenomenal success of RRR, which introduced Telugu cinema to a much broader global audience and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for Naatu Naatu.

The permanent plaque at the Mur des Cinéastes further cements Rajamouli’s place among the world’s most influential filmmakers and marks another milestone for Indian cinema on the international stage.
