Visakhapatnam: The inauguration of the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram on August 1 marks a defining moment in Andhra Pradesh’s post-bifurcation journey, providing the state with its first fully dedicated greenfield international airport and laying the foundation for a new economic and logistics hub on India’s eastern coast.
Developed by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Ltd. (GVIAL) at an investment of over ₹4,500 crore, the airport is expected to transform air connectivity for North Andhra while supporting trade, tourism, manufacturing and exports.
A milestone after bifurcation
The airport assumes significance because Andhra Pradesh lost its principal aviation hub—Hyderabad—after the state’s bifurcation in 2014.
Although Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Tirupati continued to serve commercial passengers, Visakhapatnam Airport operated from a civil enclave within the Indian Navy’s INS Dega, limiting expansion due to military operational requirements.
The opening of Bhogapuram ends decades of dependence on a defence airfield for commercial aviation. Scheduled passenger operations, along with the VTZ airport code, have now shifted to the new airport, giving Andhra Pradesh an unconstrained international aviation gateway.
Built for future growth
Constructed in just 31 months, the first phase of the airport has been developed across more than 2,200 acres.
The airport has an initial capacity to handle six million passengers annually, while the master plan allows expansion to over 40 million passengers in future phases.
Among its key infrastructure features are:
- A 3,800-metre Code-E runway capable of handling wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 777 and Airbus A350.
- A modern passenger terminal incorporating biometric check-in systems, smart baggage handling and energy-efficient design.
- Cyclone-resilient engineering suited to the east coast’s weather conditions.
- A dedicated cargo terminal with an initial handling capacity of around 20,000 metric tonnes annually.
More than an airport
Bhogapuram has been conceived as an integrated aviation ecosystem rather than merely an airport.
Under GMR’s airport-led development model, the surrounding area will be developed into an Aerocity comprising commercial complexes, hotels, convention facilities, aviation training centres, Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities and business parks.
The airport campus will also house a GMR Skill Development Centre and an Aviation Hub University, aimed at creating a skilled workforce for aviation and aerospace industries.
A catalyst for North Andhra
Industry experts believe the airport will significantly enhance Visakhapatnam’s position as one of India’s fastest-growing industrial and commercial centres.
North Andhra already hosts major sectors including ports, steel, pharmaceuticals, IT, seafood processing, textiles and engineering industries. Improved international connectivity is expected to strengthen exports and attract fresh investments.
With direct international services expected to destinations such as Dubai, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, exporters will benefit from shorter transit times and reduced logistics costs.
Seafood exporters, pharmaceutical manufacturers, agricultural producers and textile companies are expected to be among the biggest beneficiaries, as they will be able to ship products directly from Andhra Pradesh instead of relying on airports in neighbouring states.
Connectivity challenge addressed
The airport’s location—about 45 kilometres northeast of Visakhapatnam city in Vizianagaram district—initially raised concerns among travellers regarding accessibility.
To improve connectivity, the Centre and the Andhra Pradesh government have initiated multiple infrastructure projects.
A trumpet interchange on National Highway-16 provides signal-free access to the airport.
In addition, a Beach Corridor Road connecting Visakhapatnam city with Bhogapuram is under development. The government is also examining proposals for elevated expressways and dedicated electric airport bus services to reduce travel time.
These projects are expected to integrate Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam into a single economic corridor centred around the new airport.
Gateway to investment
The airport is expected to play a crucial role in supporting Andhra Pradesh’s industrial ambitions by improving connectivity for investors, multinational companies and global supply chains.
The state government views Bhogapuram as a key component of its strategy to position Andhra Pradesh as a preferred investment destination, alongside major initiatives in clean energy, electronics manufacturing, data centres, ports and logistics.
With unrestricted commercial operations, world-class infrastructure and long-term expansion potential, the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport is expected to become one of the most important aviation hubs on India’s east coast and a major driver of economic growth in the coming decades.
