Visakhapatnam: The long-pending dream of a new airport for North Andhra moved a step closer to reality on Saturday, with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) formally coming forward to develop the proposed Greenfield Airport in Srikakulam.

An MoU was signed between the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Andhra Pradesh Airport Development Corporation in the presence of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu during the CII Partnership Summit in Visakhapatnam.

Chief Minister Naidu said the new airport would significantly strengthen connectivity across North Andhra, boost tourism, and accelerate economic activity in Srikakulam district and surrounding regions. “The airport will become a growth engine for this entire region,” he said.

The state government and AAI will now jointly take up site inspections, infrastructure planning and regulatory clearances. Technical studies and land assessment for the project are currently underway, officials said.

Once completed, the Srikakulam Greenfield Airport is expected to enhance accessibility, support regional industry and tourism, and become a key link in Andhra Pradesh’s expanding aviation network.
