Kakinada: Kakinada-based San Maritime India Private Limited has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways to establish a ₹200-crore shipyard development project along the Kakinada coast. The project is expected to take off in the financial year 2026–27, marking a major boost for Andhra Pradesh’s maritime infrastructure and employment generation.
The agreement was formalised on October 28 during the India Maritime Week (IMW) 2025 held in Mumbai. The MoU was signed by Sheik Ahmed Alisha, Director of San Maritime India Pvt. Ltd., and Shyam Jagannathan, Director-General of Shipping, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who holds the Shipping and Waterways portfolio, was present at the signing ceremony, Mr. Ahmed Alisha told The Hindu.
“The Ministry will extend subsidy support, technical assistance, and guidance for the project, which will include slipways, crawler cranes, and a fabrication shed,” said Mr. Alisha. He added that the proposed shipyard is designed to create direct employment opportunities for at least 100 people.
San Maritime India Private Limited, headquartered in Kakinada, has been engaged in shipbuilding and marine services for over 15 years, with operations spanning vessel repair, marine engineering, and offshore logistics. The upcoming project is expected to strengthen India’s eastern maritime corridor and enhance the region’s ship repair and construction capacity.
The India Maritime Week 2025, which concluded on Friday, brought together major stakeholders from the shipping, logistics, and port development sectors, with a focus on sustainable maritime growth and private sector participation.
