Union Cabinet Approves ₹2,534-Crore Central Secretariat Project in Amaravati

Amaravati: In a significant boost to the development of Amaravati as Andhra Pradesh’s capital city, the Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved proposals submitted by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) for the construction of a Central Secretariat complex and residential quarters for Central government employees.

The approval paves the way for the implementation of projects worth ₹2,534 crore in Amaravati. Of the total outlay, ₹1,299.08 crore will be spent on the construction of the Common Central Secretariat, while ₹1,234.91 crore has been earmarked for residential complexes for Central government staff.

The Common Central Secretariat is expected to house various Central government offices operating from Amaravati, providing a consolidated administrative hub in the capital region. The project is seen as an important step towards strengthening the Centre’s institutional presence in Andhra Pradesh’s planned capital city.

In addition, the Centre will construct multi-storey residential complexes for Central government employees posted in Amaravati. The housing facilities are intended to cater to the growing administrative workforce expected to function from the capital region in the coming years.

The Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) has already allocated 22.53 acres of land for the project. According to official plans, 5.53 acres have been earmarked for the Central Secretariat complex, while the remaining 17 acres will be utilised for the residential township.

The Cabinet approval comes amid renewed momentum in Amaravati’s infrastructure development, with both the Centre and the Andhra Pradesh government accelerating work on key institutional and public infrastructure projects.

Officials believe the establishment of the Central Secretariat complex will not only enhance administrative coordination between the Centre and the state but also contribute to economic activity and employment generation in the capital region.

The project is expected to move into the execution phase following the Cabinet’s clearance, with CPWD set to oversee the construction of both the office and residential facilities.
