Kadapa Smart Kitchens: Solar-Powered Hubs Revolutionize Midday Meals for School Children in Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh’s pioneering “Smart Kitchens” project in Kadapa is revolutionizing midday meals for thousands of government school students. The high-tech, centralized hub-and-spoke facilities use solar power, biogas generation, and real-time app tracking to deliver hygienic, nutritious, and star-hotel-quality food across the region.

The groundbreaking pilot scheme—spearheaded by the District Administration and launched across the region—marks a radical departure from traditional, fragmented school cooking methods.

The model was initially catalyzed by Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, who contributed ₹10 lakh from his personal funds to kickstart the first integrated facility in Kadapa city.

“The government is taking steps to improve the quality, hygiene, and taste of meals served to students,” said District Collector Sridhar Cherukuri, who oversaw the rapid construction and deployment of the hubs. “Through automation and an integrated system, we are using advanced, star-hotel-style infrastructure to support student health”.

High-Tech, Eco-Friendly Infrastructure

The kitchens utilize a scientific, steam-based cooking system alongside strict, HACCP-aligned safety protocols. Sustainability is a core pillar of the project, with facilities featuring integrated 3-kW solar power systems and bio-digesters that convert vegetable waste into methane gas for cooking.

Moreover, the food delivery process is entirely digitized. Transport vehicles are equipped with GPS trackers, and officials monitor meal distribution in real time using a custom mobile application to curb food wastage and ensure consistency.

The Student Experience

Educators and students have lauded the transformation, noting a distinct improvement in both nutrition and the dining experience.

“Previously, we were not having a mid-day meal like this,” said Kavya Sri, a Class 7 student at Akula Veedhi in Kadapa. “It is more tasty than the food at my house!”

Teachers have also observed the project’s positive impact on school attendance and retention. Ruth Arogya Mary, an English teacher at a local municipal corporation school, noted, “There has been a drastic fall in the number of students bringing food carriers from their homes, and credits the improved quality of food served at the school for this change”.

A Model for the Future

Following the success of the Kadapa pilot, the state government has announced aggressive expansion plans. State HRD and Education Minister Nara Lokesh formally inaugurated advanced pilot smart kitchens in September 2025 to serve thousands of students, stressing that the district-wide model is designed to support the Dokka Seethamma Midday Meal Scheme.

“Our policy is Smart Kitchen, Smart Health, Smart Children,” said Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who mandated that strict, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD)-style quality checks be applied to all regional kitchens going forward.
