Andhra Pradesh Bets on ‘Swayam AP’ to Turn SHG Products into a Global Brand

From Our Correspondent

Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh government has launched an ambitious initiative to transform products made by women self-help groups (SHGs) into a recognised national and international brand under the banner ‘Swayam AP’, as part of its broader strategy to strengthen women-led entrepreneurship and rural livelihoods.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to aggressively promote the Swayam AP brand and develop a marketing ecosystem similar to the cooperative model that helped make Amul a household name across India. The brand will market products manufactured by DWCRA and MEPMA women’s groups across the State.

The initiative is aimed at addressing one of the biggest challenges faced by women entrepreneurs – market access. While thousands of SHG members produce a wide range of products, including handloom items, handicrafts, millet-based foods, natural farming produce and household goods, many struggle to reach larger markets. The Swayam AP brand seeks to bridge this gap through common branding, quality certification and organised marketing channels.

The brand name ‘Swayam’ was finalised by the Chief Minister earlier this year after reviewing several proposals. The government felt the name reflected the spirit of self-reliance and women-led enterprise that defines the self-help group movement. Officials were also instructed to create an attractive brand identity capable of appealing to both domestic and international consumers.

To streamline distribution and improve market reach, the government has decided to establish centralised order processing centres in Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada. These hubs will handle order processing, packaging and logistics, creating an integrated supply chain for products marketed under the Swayam AP brand.

In a move aimed at protecting the interests of women entrepreneurs, the government will ensure that SHG members receive the predetermined price for their products at the time of procurement itself. This means that women producers will not bear losses even if sales are delayed or lower than expected.

Apart from online marketing and e-commerce channels, the government plans to strengthen direct retail sales. Six dedicated retail outlets will be established initially, with three stores each in Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam, to showcase and sell Swayam AP products directly to consumers. The initiative is expected to improve market visibility, enhance earnings for SHG members and build a sustainable brand for Andhra Pradesh’s women-led enterprises.

Naidu has emphasised that quality standards, traceability and certification will be critical to the success of the brand. He has asked district administrations to ensure that products marketed under Swayam AP meet global benchmarks, enabling them to compete in export markets. The government is also exploring district-specific product branding to encourage innovation and competition among SHGs.

The launch of Swayam AP is part of the State’s larger push to create one lakh women entrepreneurs and enhance economic participation among women. Industry observers believe that a strong umbrella brand could significantly improve the earnings of SHG members while creating a scalable rural enterprise ecosystem across Andhra Pradesh.
