Kadapa: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu officially launched the construction works and laid the foundation stone for the ₹16,350-crore JSW Rayalaseema Integrated Steel Plant today in YSR Kadapa district. The mega project, being executed by JSW Andhra Pradesh Steel Limited over 1,100 acres across Sunnapurallapalle and Peddandluru villages in Jammalamadugu mandal, marks a decisive turning point in fulfilling a long-pending industrial aspiration for the Rayalaseema region.
Key Highlights of the Project
- Total Financial Investment: ₹16,350 crore allocated across two key phases.
- Phase-I Breakdown: ₹4,500 crore earmarked for immediate construction and initial structural works.
- Phase-II Expansion: ₹11,850 crore planned for subsequent capacity expansion.
- Production Capacity: Planned to reach 2 Million Tons Per Annum (MTPA).
- Commercial Rollout: Commercial production is targeted to officially begin by April 2029.
Strategic Shift to “Green Steel”
Breaking away from traditional coal-heavy manufacturing methods, the new Rayalaseema Steel Plant (RSP) is engineered to operate as a modern, environment-friendly facility. The plant will adopt an advanced scrap-based electric arc furnace technology entirely powered by renewable energy systems, significantly reducing carbon emissions.
Furthermore, the initial product lineup under Phase-I will focus primarily on structural manufacturing materials, including universal columns, parallel beams, universal beams, and heavy channels. To support infrastructure and technical integration, the JSW Group is exploring a technology partnership with Japan’s JFE Steel Corporation to maintain global production standards.
Regional Economic Impact
The mega-facility is projected to generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities for local youth, starting with 1,000 core positions in the first phase. To build a self-sustaining industrial community, authorities have identified an additional 200 acres next to the production area specifically for a dedicated residential township. Alongside the steel hub, concurrent efforts are being launched in the renewable energy sector, with an additional ₹20,350 crore investment allocated toward solar energy infrastructure to anchor the region’s clean energy grid.
Breaking a 12-Year Deadlock
The project holds immense symbolic value for Andhra Pradesh, having survived a protracted administrative and political deadlock spanning more than a decade. The steel plant had famously witnessed repetitive foundation ceremonies under successive state regimes in 2018, 2019, and 2023, without ever advancing past preliminary site-clearing stages.
Speaking to the public gathering during the event, Chief Minister Naidu emphasized that this rollout signals a shift from “fraudulent foundation stones” to real structural engineering. He declared that the administration has successfully ironed out all legal, financial, and regulatory hurdles to ensure the project meets its final construction targets without further delays.
